2011 PROGRAM PREVIEW
The design story behind SFO’s new Terminal 2
Tue, Jun 7, 2011

If you’re flying American or Virgin America in and out of San Francisco International this year for IRDC, you’ll get to experience the new amenity-rich, headline-making, Gensler-designed Terminal 2, which opened in April.

Not only can you plug your laptop into one of more than 350 power outlets in T2’s lounge, you can refill your water bottle for free at a “hydration station,” drop your banana peel into a composting bin instead of a trash can, operate mechanical “butterflies” in the children’s play area, and—get this—sit on a comfortable ottoman while re-shoeing after you clear security. That’s almost as impressive as the LEED Gold certification the project is expected to earn.

There’s a retail component, of course—12 restaurants, nine stores, a gourmet marketplace and a spa—so we asked Gensler’s Jeff Henry and Melissa Mizell to walk us through the terminal’s transformation and discuss the trends driving changes in airport retailing across the country.

Their session, In Transit: New Models of Airport Retail, is set for day two of the conference, Thursday, September 8. They’ll be joined by Ray Quesada, project manager for SFO’s Bureau of Design & Construction, who discusses the project in this USA Today video.
