Flight 001

Here’s a concept that would feel right at home in San Francisco International’s smart new Terminal 2, the topic of this post from Tuesday.

But the founders of travel store Flight 001, Brad John and John Sencion, chose the trendy Hayes Valley district for the growing chain’s first San Francisco location. “Hayes Valley caters to the design driven, internationally traveled passenger who is our target market. It is by far our favorite neighborhood in San Francisco.”

Flight 001’s eight stores are modeled after the interior of a 747, complete with runway lighting down the center aisle. And all include the Pan Am Flight 001 Commemorative wall installation, an ode to the world’s only continuous transcontinental flight, which, for almost 40 years, originated in San Francisco and made stops in nine cities before landing in New York 48 hours after takeoff. Whew.

Dario Antonioni of Los Angeles-based Orange 22 designed the stores and custom fixtures, creating a 1960s vibe with modern materials such as Pirelli tiles, walnut paneling and opaque Plexiglass.
