The 2010 Iron Merchant Challenge (IRDC’s Iron Chef-inspired visual merchandising competition) focused on using visual to relate to the local community. Master of ceremonies Joe Baer reached out to Toronto charity Boost, which raises awareness of child abuse, and challenged participants to create a display supporting the organization’s “Go Purple” campaign.

Armed with a mannequin, display cage, purple-themed props and the secret ingredient—cloth butterflies—five teams worked feverishly to complete their display in one hour’s time.

The winners? The Blue Team, which carried its mannequin throughout the hotel asking guests to write their promises to children of the world.
